Computer Memory

Random Access Memory is a form of temporary electronic storage. It is housed inside the computer and used to temporarily hold data and instructions in the same location.

When a program is started, the Operating System temporarily copies data and instructions from the hard drive or disk that it is stored on to the RAM . Because information transferal is quicker, this allows the program to run smoothly while in use. Any information that is saved is still put on the hard drive so no information is usually lost during the process. However, changes in a document made since the last save will disappear if the computers power is suddenly terminated. Once the program is terminated or no longer in use, the information is erased from the RAM and then replaced with whatever new data is currently in use.

Random Access Memory is also called volatile memory . This is because the contents of RAM disappear when the electricity is switched off. If you are working on an important document, it is a good idea to save frequently in order to ensure that you do not loose your data because of a power failure or some other problem that may occur.
