A computer that is portable has been specifically designed to be moved from one place to another with a relative amount of ease. The term “portable computer” usually refers to a computer that is technically similar to a desktop computer - such as a laptop - but palm tops and PDA’s can also come under this classification.

Portable computers always have some sort of battery so that it can be used away from a mains power supply. They also come with a specialized carrying case which serves for protection of the device.

Notebook/laptop computers are a very popular form of portable computer. Notebooks have a screen and a keyboard with full sized keys. They can be run on their battery or plugged into the mains. They have a hard drive, floppy disk drive, a CD-ROM/CD-writer/rewriter/DVD drive and most have speakers which are built in. Modems and network cards are additional features. Essentially, a notebook is everything you need in a portable package. They are slightly larger than A4 size and weigh between 2–3.5kg. Notebooks are more expensive than desktop computers.

Sub-notebooks/Palmtops are smaller than notebooks and as a result have less in them. This kind of portable computer is conveniently light and their keyboards and displays are smaller. Most of their devices are external and can be connected to the notebook if needed. Sub-notebooks come with an internal modem and network card.

The Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) is a hand held device that is smaller than a palmtop. Essentially, they serve as personal organizers but they have many additional functions. A PDA usually has a clock, date book, task list, calculator, address book and memo pad. The most notable feature of a PDA is its ability to transfer information to a desktop or laptop computer.
