An annuity is a contact issued by an insurance company that promises to make periodic payments (most often monthly) of a certain sum of money for a period of time in someone’s life. There are two main types of annuities - immediate annuities and deferred annuities.

With an immediate annuity, you pay a lump sum amount to an insurance company in return for receiving a fixed stream of payments during your lifetime. With a deferred annuity, you are essentially investing in a long term savings account where the increase in value is tax free.

The other type of investing money is by way of a variable Annuity which is much more complex.

When the time has come for you to receive income from your annuity policy, you can choose to receive a life annuity. These are systematic income payments that will last for the rest of your life. You can also choose to have a gift annuity. This means that you will make a small donation to charity from your annuity rates and receive the tax benefits thereof. Because of this, a gift annuity can result in an increase in your monthly payments.
